Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin
The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) has placed a strong emphasis on legal studies since its establishment in 1918. The founding of the university included the creation of two legal faculties: the Faculty of Canon Law and Moral Sciences, and the Faculty of Law and Socio-Economic Sciences. Today, the Faculty of Law, Canon Law, and Administration at KUL is one of the leading educational and research centers in Poland, offering a comprehensive academic program in law, canon law, administration, European studies, business law, and European and international law.
We began teaching in English in 2011, offering two courses in English: a Bachelor’s in European Studies and a Master’s in European Union Law (hybrid format). Since the 2025/2026 academic year, our offerings have been expanded to include a Bachelor’s in European and International Legal Studies.

Faculty Past and Present
The Faculty of Canon Law and Moral Sciences was a pioneer in Poland, offering unique studies in canon law. Between 1920 and 1923, the Faculty introduced organizational changes that allowed for the further development of legal and moral sciences. During the interwar period, the Faculty of Canon Law became the only such department in Poland.
After World War II, the Department of Law in the Faculty of Law and Socio-Economic Sciences experienced dynamic growth. Immediately after the war, renowned professors began working in the Department of Law. The scale of its development can be seen in the fact that, in the 1949/1950 academic year, 678 students were enrolled. Unfortunately, in 1952, the Department of Law was dissolved. The closure of the Faculty of Law and Socio-Economic Sciences was part of a broader policy by the communist authorities to limit KUL’s influence on the education and upbringing of young academics. This also reflected the authorities’ efforts to ideologize and instrumentalize the law.
Despite numerous obstacles posed by the communist authorities, the Law Section was reactivated in 1981. Contrary to the education standards at law faculties in Poland at that time, which were shaped by a centrally planned economy, the Catholic University of Lublin prepared its graduates comprehensively, including teaching economic law within constitutional democracies. As a result, our graduates formed the core of the public service in the first decades following Poland’s regained independence.
